Mid-way around Africa we decided that South America was to be our next target mission. There are various options… start in North America and drive down… ship to South America and drive up. Hmmmm… how to go about planning an overland trip to South America?
Where to start?
Starting in North America didn’t seem to be the best plan for October, just as winter is approaching. Patagonia really appealed to us. It will be spring down there! And we had heard about getting last minute deals in Ushuaia for Antarctica trips… Wow! So we decided to start in the south. We heard about Grimaldi lines shipping Europe to Montevideo and you can sail on the ship with your truck. Sounds interesting…
Generally, we’re not big on planning. We find if we make plans they always change anyway, so what’s the point? π So it came as a bit of a shock to find out that if we wanted to sail on the boat with our truck to South America, we would have to book around a year in advance :-0
How we did it
- Sail with your truck: Germany to Uruguay – how we planned, booked and prepared for the voyage
- To Montevideo… by freight ship – life on-board a freight-ship for 5 weeks
- Route Planning in South America – pleeeease don’t just stick to the PanAm highway-corridor. There is so much more to South America than western route.
- Route Map South America – drill-down in Google Maps to see our detailed route
- South America Highlights Map – an interactive map with some our highlights over 2 years touring the continent
- Preparing the Truck – Cuthbert our truck was already well-prepared after a year in Africa, but there were some specific things we wanted to change before venturing to South America
- Insurance overlanding – it’s all a bit of a risk balance…
