While I had the intercooler removed to fix the fan coupling, I took the opportunity to change the crank case breather oil filter. To replace it I had to:
– unbolt the oil dip stick, catch the spacer behind the bracket, then twist the pipe clear;
– undo the 3 nuts holding the cover on and remove it;
– undo the circlip and pull out the oil filter.
Refit in the reverse order.
- The breather oil filter, held in place with a circlip
- The old and new breather oil filters
There has been a lot of chat on some forums about fitting catch cans etc, saying that the filter is not fit for purpose. Well I have done 165,000 km and the filter looks like new, no clogging evident. I think it would have easily lasted to 200,000km. Interestingly, my old filter has a covering on the outside of the filter element with a kind of diagonal gap running around the filter. The new one is just the internal filter without this covering.
I do have the option cold weather heater installed in my breather pipe, I don’t know if that helps to keep the filter flowing…

- This is the crank case vent pipe heater in its installed location (just above the alternator)
