When the differential is selected to lock on either axle, there is an indication light on the dash-board to show whether the lock has successfully engaged. Recently I had had difficulty in engaging the rear lock and on inspection, I found that the switch mounted on the axle had been smashed (probably by a stone flying up while driving on gravel tracks).
The components of the front and rear axle differentials are interchangeable, so a quick-fix was to swap the rear axle switch with the front axle switch, which is seldom used. The front axle switch is located on the back of the front axle, so it is better protected than the switch on the rear axle which sits on the forward side of the axle and is more likely to be hit by stones flying up from the tyres. I have therefore made this stone guard for the rear switch.
Now I need to repair the broken switch. To do this I trimmed the damaged area on the switch and cut-out a piece of spare electrical socket to fill in the missing piece on the original switch.
I then glued the pieces together β fixed!
I have now made a slighly more substantial guard for the switch using a section of rear mud guard and an aluminuim strip.
