Boaty does Atitlán

Guilty as charged. We have been down-right lazy recently and haven’t done a blog for a while. Truth is… we haven’t been doing much adventuring. We have been, as the cool kids say, ‘chilling-out’ in and around the beautiful town of Antigua. But we do have one little piece of exciting news to report…. kayaking lake atitlan

Boaty’s maiden voyage

Ladies and Gentlemen… (dramatic drumroll)… please be up-standing and raise your glasses to toast the newest member of the Tucks’ Truck Team… Mr Boaty McBoatface!!!

Since we arrived in Central America we have rented the odd kayak here and there for local trips and really enjoyed it. We decided it would be great to have one of our own. A bit of inter-web research identified a conveniently sized inflatable version for sale in the USA. By a stroke of extraordinary luck, our travel friends Scott and Angela (see www.lifeallout.com) who we last met in Medellin, Colombia, just happen to be flying down to Guatemala and have very kindly agreed to bring it for us.  We were so excited when they brought our new kayak to our campsite in Antigua and we decided to christen him Boaty McBoatface.

An absence of water won’t stop us testing Boaty

Any gurus of Guatemalan geography will be aware that Antigua has no nearby ocean, lake or river on which we could test Boaty, so we initially had to be satisfied with inflating him and sitting in the grass of the police compound park-up spot. A very sad image!

Anyway… a week or so later we could go over to the beautiful Lake Atitlan some 100ish km west of Antigua to give Boaty his maiden voyage. We spent a fabulous time there at Pasaj Cap campsite on the lake-shore. We took Boaty out each morning along the lake to a different café for brunch, then kayaking back before the afternoon winds and choppy water set-in. Even after a few days our technique and timing is improving. We’re looking forward to our next opportunity to take Boaty out on some water somewhere. Any suggestions in the region, please let us know.

Now we’re on the move again with new adventures and a ‘proper’ blog shortly. In meantime landlubbers, get yourself some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the epic blockbuster of Boaty McBoatface on the spectacular Lake Atitlan 😊

For anyone interested, Boaty is an Advanced Elements Convertible DS Series (AE1007DS) kayak purchased from Air Kayak
