Which smart cookie once said “an army marches on its stomach”? Napoleon? Frederick the Great? Colonel Sanders? Whoever… they could have had the courtesy to mention the 21st century overlander in this quote too! The overlanding kitchen takes a bit of planning to get the tasty food (washed down with the odd beer and wine) necessary to fuel a trip around the world you know 🙂 !
We have been asked a few questions about our overlanding kitchen, our food supplies and cooking whilst on the road. So how do we go about this? We like eating in cafes/restaurants when nice ones are available, but in some parts of the world this is a question of ‘managing expectations’. In some areas, even less-than-gourmet-barely-acceptable establishments can be far and few between. Rural Africa for example… unless you have exceptional culinary courage and a cast-iron stomach, then self-catering might be the only safe option. But the gastronomic discovery journey is a major part of the overlanding adventure, so we’ve made a few notes on our ‘Top-Tips’ learned so far (click on the links below):
- Overlanding Kitchen Kit – gadgets, cooking and refrigeration
- Overlanding Recipes – not a comprehensive guide to everyday eats, but my favourite special easy-do items that I can’t always find in shops, e.g.: yoghurt, flatbreads, banana icecream, plus a whole host of yummy sourdough discard things eg: pancakes, crepes, scone etc
- Overlanding Bread – one of our challenges in the countries we’ve been to so far is finding good bread. So here’s how we manage our bread addiction on the road, including a nice little sourdough bread recipe.
- Overlanding with Sourdough – how I grow/feed and maintain the sourdough starter culture on the road, not just for bread, but lots of easy sourdough discard recipes for treats like pancakes, crepes, scones etc
- Overlanding Africa – Food – our first major overlanding destination gave us some minor challenges and showed us what overlanding food planning is all about!
We’d be happy to hear from anyone with comments/suggestions on any ‘vital’ overlanding kitchen gadget or recipes to enhance our slightly less than gastronomic life in Cuthbert (see our Contact page).
